The roots of this proud German car manufacturer reside in
the aeronautical industry. The company’s founder, Gustav Otto, was
the son of the inventor of the Otto four-stroke petrol engine, and he
used to manufacture aero engines, hence the blue and white spinning “propeller”
design of the BMW logo.
In 1928 car production was started, the company having already changed
its name to BMW, which was fast gaining renown as a motorbike manufacturer.
Its first car was the BMW Dixie, which was based on the 1928 Austin Seven.
Car production continued until the late-1950s, at which point Herr Albert
Quandt became a shareholder in a company that desperately needed to be
rescued. The BMW 1500 was the start of the firm’s renaissance and
through the 1960s it developed its current strong image as a producer
of impeccable cars of character and high quality.
The company acquired the assets of Rover Group in the mid-1990s, but it was an ill-fated relationship, leading to innumerable conflicts between shareholders and company officers, until BMW shed what became known as its “English Patient”. However, it retains the rights to several brands including Austin-Healey, Riley and Mini. BMW currently produces the New Mini at the former Rover Cowley plant, in Oxfordshire.
With 23 production and assembly plants, 27 sales subsidiaries
and a research and development network the BMW Group is present in the
worldwide markets.
930221 BMW cars were produced worldwide in 2002.
BMW 3-Series Seat Covers
Best-selling BMW with revised engine line-up for 2003 and styling tweaks on the coupe and cabriolet.
Sport sedan enthusiasts everywhere will soon have cause to celebrate an automotive landmark. Next spring the all-new BMW 3 Series will make its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show.
As with its predecessors, the fifth generation BMW 3 Series raises the sport sedan benchmark - decisively and significantly. Continuing to improve a concept that BMW pioneered more than forty years ago, the new 3 Series offers greater performance, safety and security as well as greater comfort and convenience.
Groundbreaking six-cylinder with light-weight magnesium
crankcase
From the start the new 3 Series will be available with a choice of two
in-line 6-cylinder engines, continuing a 3 Series tradition. The all-new
3.0-liter unit in the 330i offers a significant increase in performance.
It is rated at 190 kW (258 DIN hp). In BMW's ongoing pursuit of weight
reduction, this engine is the first in large-scale series production to
use magnesium which, compared to aluminum, is 30 percent lighter. Magnesium
is used in the crankcase, the crankshaft bearings and the cylinder head
cover.
This engine is also the first six-cylinder to use BMW VALVETRONIC. With infinitely variable valve lift in place of the traditional throttle butterfly, this system improves both throttle response and fuel efficiency. Like previous BMW engines which have incorporated VALVETRONIC, the gains are impressive. In the case of the 330i, horsepower increases by 13%, while fuel consumption decreases by 12%. This unique technology works in tandem with BMW's double-VANOS variable valve timing for both intake and exhaust camshafts. The new 330i will accelerate from 0 - 60 mph in approximately six seconds.
BMW 5-Series Seat Covers
BMW has announced details of the new BMW 5 Series Touring models and a new high performance diesel engine for the 5 Series range. The third generation of BMW 5 Series Touring will debut at the Geneva Salon on 2 March. In the autumn, a brand new high performance diesel engine arrives in the new 535d, offering new high levels of power and torque from a BMW diesel.
The new BMW 535d Saloon and Touring
Featuring BMW’s award-winning 3.0-litre diesel engine, the all-new
BMW 535d offers a first for a BMW diesel car engine - two-stage turbocharging.
The new engine delivers a maximum output of 272 bhp and, more importantly, 560 Nm of torque at 2,000 rpm, with 500 Nm available at just 1,500 rpm. This propels the new BMW 535d from zero to 62 mph in just 6.6 seconds. To put this into perspective, the current 530d, itself no slouch, produces 218 bhp while the E39 M5 offered 500 Nm of torque.
The new-generation 2.5 and 3.0-litre diesel and 4.4-litre V8 petrol engines also power the new BMW 5 Series Touring range, with only the 2.5-litre unit carried over from the previous generation Touring.
BMW 6-Series Seat Covers
Ever since the original 6 Series graced our roads, enthusiasts were
tantalized by the notion of a convertible version of that automotive
icon. For enthusiasts everywhere the wait is over. The all-new 6 Series
Convertible makes its world debut on January 5th at the 2004 NAIAS in
Detroit, Michigan. Drop-dead gorgeous looks, state-of-the-art technology,
outstanding performance and unlimited driving pleasure with only the
blue sky above - these are the ingredients that await four passengers.
Top-up or top-down, the 6 Series Convertible is stunning. With the top
up it captures the same purposeful, athletic nature of the 6 Series
Coupe. With the top down another dimension of its personality is revealed.
The 645Ci Convertible is first and foremost a BMW, so dynamic performance comes standard. It shares its 4.4-liter V8 with the 645Ci Coupe - horsepower is 325, maximum torque is 330 lb-ft. Infinite adjustment of virtually all relevant parameters such as valve timing (double-VANOS), valve lift (VALVETRONIC) and intake manifold runner length enables the engine to adjust instantly to any demand and requirement.
Combined with one of three 6-speed transmissions available on the new
model - manual, STEPTRONIC automatic or BMW's Formula 1-inspired Sequential
Manual Gearbox (SMG). The new Convertible will reached 60 MPH in about
six seconds on its way to an electronically limited top-speed of 155
MPH.
Of course, you expect the new 6 Series Convertible to offer handling
to match its straight-line performance. Active Roll Stabilization (ARS)
is standard to keep things on-the-level even when one's driving gets
enthusiastic by reducing body lean in corners. For those who care for
an even finer edge, a Sport Package is available. In addition to sport
seats and a sport steering wheel the package includes firmer shocks
and springs and mixed-width 19-inch wheels with performance tires.
BMW 7-Series Seat Covers
The most successful BMW 7 Series of all time, is ready to stride confidently into the second phase of its lifecycle.
Headlining the enhancements are two more powerful V8 engines. Driving dynamics and sporting performance are enriched for greater levels of satisfaction. Detail refinements to the exterior and interior bring even more driving enjoyment. The sum of these changes raises the class benchmark still further, as the 2005 BMW 7 Series sets yet another new standard in luxury performance. The natural elegance and charisma of the stand-out 7 Series has been enhanced with a subtle freshening to sharpen its visual appeal. The biggest changes lie under the bonnet, with updated V8 engines given more capacity, for more power and even more electrifying responsiveness. The 750i/Li designation makes its first appearance in the E65 standard wheelbase and E66 lengthened wheelbase 7 Series. Previously the 750i badge indicated twelve silent running, highly muscular cylinders.
Inside the car, the unique feeling of luxury and peaceful tranquillity has been further refined by the choice of materials and colours. BMW's iDrive allows the driver to focus consistently on prevailing driving and traffic conditions. Optimised menu guidance in the Control Display, upgraded menu presentation, and direct access to the entertainment functions - in particular selection of the audio source and the radio frequency band - are the key changes. In 2003, customer deliveries of 57,899 units worldwide was the best ever year for the BMW 7 Series, a 14 percent increase on the previous high water mark (1997).
Introducing the current 7 Series, BMW has succeeded in giving the new model a firm position in the region's luxury segment, catching up in terms of volume with the markets where, by tradition, the BMW 7 Series has always had a strong position - in particular Europe and North America.
Accounting for more than 50 per cent of total sales, the BMW 745i/Li with its large V8 power unit is the best-selling model worldwide. The long-wheelbase version, in turn, accounts for more than half of all BMW 7 Series sold.
BMW X-Series Seat Covers
BMW has announced first details of its new X3 model. Expanding the BMW X-family, this dynamic and versatile new model combines the outstanding agility of a BMW saloon with the practicality of a Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV).
xDrive
The X3 introduces BMW's patented xDrive intelligent four-wheel-drive,
which sets new standards in agility for all-wheel-drive systems.
It works by changing torque distribution from front-to-rear axles
in an instant, offering substantial improvements in stability, driving
pleasure and safety.
xDrive is both fully adjustable and infinitely variable. It feeds optimum torque to the required axle at any time, countering understeer and oversteer while cornering on road. Off-road, xDrive significantly improves traction by distributing drive forces to the axle with most grip. As soon as wheel spin threatens, the electro-hydraulic centre coupling transfers power to the axle with greater traction.
Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) complements xDrive, but intervenes far later and is required less frequently. While xDrive, helps prevent loss of traction by channelling drive forces axle-to-axle, DSC works on individual wheels, intervening when one starts to slip. In these circumstances DSC cuts power to the relevant wheel and, where necessary, also applies brakes.
